I love this bag from Stella McCartney! I am definitely in the mood for fall shopping.

Yeohlee

I know I've been slacking this month with postings. And I know fashion week was last week and actually it seemed a little different this year. Almost like it didn't happen at all. I don't get to go to many, but I am always impressed by Yeohlee. These are photos from the 2007 Spring Show.

So today I go to checkout Vera Wang's new collection at kohls.com. Everything is sold out! I'm so sad.

Project M

Project M works on the "act locally" level. This innovative summer design camp was created by John Bielenberg in 2003 and was inspired by Samuel Mockbee, who founded The Rural Studio for Architecture in Alabama and won the MacArthur Prize for his work. Every year Project M brings together 8-10 young designers for an intensive design experience: the designers have to conceive and develop their own project. To date, projects have included work in Costa Rica and Ghana, an expedition to deliver donated supplies to Katrina victims, creating new parks on abandoned urban lots in East Baltimore, and, now, the Buy A Meter project in Hale County, Alabama.

The facts are simple: one in four families in Hale County are not connected to the municipal water system. Without this service, these families often get water contaminated with sewage. It costs $425 to bring clean water to a single home. It is clear that in the last decade, the rural poor in America have gotten poorer. But having safe water is not something most of us think of as a problem in our country. Let alone a design problem. [Via Design Observer.]

A Moment of Reflection

Today was appropriate, the skies were moody and dark, thunder roared and rain poured. Nature seemed to reflect the spirit of the city, and acted as a fitting reminder of all that has been lost. Now at 6:05 pm the rain has stopped and the sky cleared, and tomorrow it will seem like nothing happened at all. May our memories be steadfast, beaming lights of salutations to the heavens.

Gemma

I have to mention Gemma, the new Italian restaurant at the Bowery Hotel. I was a little underwhelmed by the classic Tuscan decor, but who cares when you're stuffing your face with a plum cobbler. I highly recommend the Artichoke salad, Rigatoni, and the swordfish. I can't wait to go back to try the wood-oven pizza and the cannoli. Yum. For a second opinion read NY magazine's review.

Meet Sebastián (Again)

Sebastián Errázuriz is on the cover of I.D. magazine. I'm thrilled. His work is thoughtful, provocative, and you've probably never seen anything like it before. Kudos!

Note: I also wrote about Sebastián on July 27, 2007.

GIVE/LIVE

My college friends and I are planning a vacation for spring. I'm sure we will end up in Vegas or Miami, but I have a different idea. Wouldn't it be great to go to New Orleans to volunteer during the day and party at night? I don't think this idea will prevail. And it is not my intention to make anyone feel bad about not spending their vacation building a house. But I know that I can help. What if I were a Katrina victim? I would want help. I would want the media to show what was going on. And the media is doing exactly that, from the NY Times Magazine, Time, Fortune Small Business (bottom) to Anderson Cooper and Oprah. I am proud to work for company that understands that it is a responsibility, not a privilege, to tell the stories of the people who make up this country and the world.

Just in time for fashion week, Vena Cava's new website is up and running. Glad to be back in the swing of things.
